We currently farm Hyline and Shaver birds which are commercial laying breeds. We stock these birds for the following reasons;

  • High quality laying performance
  • They are very quiet birds that adapt well to free range
  • With proper care they are capable of laying up to 300 eggs a year
  • The shell quality is extremely good
  • The mortality rate is very low

Keighleys pullets on a lifestyle block

Pullets

Keighleys supply chickens from day old to point of lay. The optimal age to purchase a pullet is from 15 to 17 weeks of age. This allows them time to adjust to their new surroundings prior to laying. A bird generally starts to lay from 18 to 20 weeks of age. Pullets are available for purchase through our shop. Please pre-order to ensure availability.

Keighleys mash

Feed

We recommend a feeding rate of 140 – 150 grams of Keighleys mash per bird per day. Two-thirds in the morning and a top up late afternoon. Feed the mash dry.

Fresh water is essential. It needs to be in a heavy container that can’t be knocked over.

Housing - Outpost Buildings Ltd

Housing

Keep new birds inside for a few days before opening the door and letting them make their own way out. Ensure if you already have hens that they don’t pick on the new arrivals.

Encourage your birds to perch by placing them on the perch at dusk for several nights.

Clean the hen house out at least twice a year. We recommend untreated wood shavings for the nest boxes and the floor.
